Certificate Cancellation: NYSC Justifies Action Against Corps Member After Tinubu Remarks

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has shared why they took back the completion document of Rita Uguamaye, a young person in the program who became well-known after speaking to President Bola Tinubu about the country’s problems.

Uguamaye became popular when she questioned the Federal Government about being late in giving more money each month to current participants in the program.

The Federal Government had raised the money given to program participants from N33,000 to N77,000, but the increased amount was not paid on time.

In a popular online video, Uguamaye mentioned that the holdup was causing her fellow young people in the program needless trouble.

The remark stirred up different feelings as some folks praised her, while others felt it was not right for someone in the program to speak so harshly about the government or the setup.

Even so, there were stories that her time in the program was lengthened, a punishment given to people in the program who did not follow the rules.

But now, stories that her official paper is being taken back are making waves.

In response to the widespread disapproval, the NYSC leaders put out a statement to make things clearer.

“The NYSC leaders want to clear up confusing information going around on social media about Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a member of the program with the state code LA/24B/8325.”

It is not true that she was refused an official paper because she spoke badly about the government; this claim is completely false and without any basis.

“Rita is one of 131 members of the program whose official papers were held back for good reasons related to discipline. To be exact, Rita’s time in the program was increased by two months because she missed the April 2025 check-in that uses body measurements, which is what the NYSC rules say should happen.

“It’s worth knowing that this increase is normal and not just for her, and the idea of treating everyone the same was used in this situation.

The NYSC leaders then ask the public to look at this issue with understanding, since increasing service time for not following the rules is something that has been done for a long time in the NYSC and should not be used for political reasons.

“The NYSC program is still dedicated to doing what it is supposed to do, as the country’s main rules say. Nigeria belongs to us; Nigeria is what we serve.”
